EPILOGUE:
A LEAP OF FAITH
The blue of the sky and the sound of applause.
I’m on my back, looking up at a Rotterdam day, surrounded by a crowd of
cheering extras. In the minutes after a stunt, after the adrenaline has surged
and drained away, sometimes I see faces—faces and ghosts.
My father and mother, in their home a continent away. Are they thinking of
me? Are they worrying that this will be the time I won’t come home?
My wife and son, leading their separate lives, wondering perhaps if this
husband, father, stranger will ever really be a part of their world, or always
lost to the larger world outside.
Leonard Ho, who believed in me when few people did, who supported me,
taught me, and helped me grow up.
Willie Chan, who has stood by me in good and bad, and been all the
guide, mentor, and friend that anyone could ask for and have the fortune to
receive.
My brothers and sisters, big and little, with whom I ate and slept and
fought and argued and grew and learned.
And Master!
You made this leap possible, and all the ones before it. Without you,
there would never have been a Jackie Chan.
I hated you.
I feared you.
I love you, Master.
Some things change.
And some never will.
